Four years ago

We always said if we ever got married, we'd go back to Italy for our wedding. After all, without Italy we wouldn't be together.

We met because of a perfect tangle of misadventures – an impulsive side-trip, a railway strike, a bus crash, lost tickets, a missed connection – things that could only seem "meant to be" in hindsight. And we fell for each other by accident, really – blame the bridges of Venice at midnight, an orchestra practicing in the back streets after dusk, homemade wine, fireflies like Christmas lights on the hills. When it comes to amore, Italy doesn't mess around.

When we planned our wedding in Florence, we didn't forget the chaos of the time we'd spent in Italy (it was charming, but it was chaos) and we decided to keep things as simple as we could. I made our invitations and I bought my dress in Dallas, without a single alteration. My father-in-law chose my wedding shoes. My mum did my hair (if you could see the back, you'd know she's a genius). I did my own makeup. My brother Aaron made my bouquet from flowers he found at a little roadside store on the morning of the wedding, and my brother Jules played the piano in the church. The priest was an old friend of Nathan's med school chaplain. We had our reception at a 14th-century villa on an olive grove in the countryside – a place we saw for the first time just three days before the wedding. Every question the owner asked us, we answered "just do what you usually do, and we'll be happy". We even skipped the usual crowd of attendants – Aaron was my best man, and Nathan's best man was John (his friend since fourth grade, who was with us when we met – poor soul).

All our simple plans aside, we were determined to expect the unexpected and not come unglued if it all went awry. Really, what's Italy without a few twists in the tale?

Imagine our amazement when everything – and I mean everything – went right. The sun shone in the middle of February! The day was warm, where 10 days earlier there'd been snow! The photographers came all the way from Poggibonsi, and were brilliant. The priest felt like an old friend. And out of all the Australians and all the Americans, not one of our 50 guests got lost.

Our wedding day was four years ago. But when we think about February 17, 2004, it sometimes feels like yesterday. I mean it – when it comes to love, Italy doesn't mess around.

Brides everywhere...

I love weddings and I love being chosen for Etsy treasuries – so this was good: jewellery designer onesmallstar put my Bella Figura "Happily Ever After" card in her bright-and-shiny wedding-themed treasury!

Prettiness

After Annie and Fred's ceremony, the stairs were awash with little girls in white dresses playing with their activity bags – putting on silvery rings, playing with stickers, eating crackers, drawing in their notebooks... (For weddings where children will be at the ceremony, activity bags are an excellent idea).

Speaking of excellent things – see that velvety rose clip in Berry's hair, with the little sparkle in the centre? That was one of my very clever Etsy acquisitions. I also got some adorable little white flower clips for her to wear to Aaron and Sue's wedding (see picture below). Everywhere we went, people commented on how cute she was with those clips in her hair. So... nice work PamperingBeki! They were a hit.

We love a good wedding

Aaron and Sue got married! It was the event that launched this April trek around the world, and it was so worth the distance!

You know how much more fabulous weddings are when you really, really like the couple and truly see that they're meant to be together? Well, this was one of those weddings.

A gorgeous, sweet bride, my three brilliant brothers looking oh-so-smooth in their suits, and lots of happy people in very pretty places... perfect.

How cute are the little bride-and-groom corks? My brother Dan's artist girlfriend Zoe created them – hilarious, genius...

Berry did put on a bit of an uninvited performance in the second row of the chapel during the first prayers. Nothing bad or noisy really – she just saw no reason why an 18-month-old in a special dress shouldn't be allowed to caper around among the guests, and made every effort to get out there... Zoe distracted her for a few minutes with her special kitten brooch (note to girls with children: Zoe is a treasure trove of magical decorations guaranteed to fascinate children – sit near her!) ...unfortunately in the end I spent most of the ceremony standing up the back at the doors, with Berry scampering around on the grass outside. Lucky the chapel was cosy; made it easier to hear.

I loved the musical for Aaron and Sue's bridal waltz. No idea what it was called, but I loved it. And the speeches were excellent (this is rare at a wedding, I don't care what anyone says).

Australian Wedding

At last... here are the lovely antique-themed invitations created for Aaron and Sue's wedding on the Gold Coast. The invitation is printed on luxe textured card and tucked in its chocolate folder, with the reception card, reply card and directions.
